The Veil of the Virgin (The Sacnta Camisia, Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres))
Known since the 18th century as the “Veil of the Virgin”, the relic, traditionally believed to have been worn by the Virgin Mary, has been traced back to 5th century Constaninople.
The Empress Irene of Byzantium sent it as a gift to Charlemagne, whose grandson, Charles the Bald, donated it to the Chartres Cathedral in 876. According to experts of the relic, made of silk, probably dates from the 1st century and is of Middle Eastern Origin.
