Intro. We recently spent a weekend
in Richmond, VA visiting our friends. While
there, we spent a Saturday seeing some of the sights in Richmond. We
visited the Jefferson Hotel, the Virginia State Capitol, and St. Paul's
Episcopal Church.
-
Built in 1895, the historic Jefferson
Hotel is the premier place to stay in Richmond. Patrons have
included US Presidents William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson,
Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin D. Roosevelt and celebrities, such as Henry
James, Charles Lindbergh, The Rolling Stones, Dolly Parton, and Elvis
Presley. The hotel is known in the past for its alligators in the
lobby, the last of which died in 1948.
-
Even older, the Virginia
State Capitol was built in 1785 and it is the home of the oldest
legislative body in the Western Hemisphere, the Virginia Assembly.
Virginia's State Capitol has a long and interesting history including its
service as the Capitol of the Confederacy during the American Civil
War. While there, we came upon a wedding party being photographed
outside the capitol and, of course, I grabbed a couple of shots.
-
Built in 1845, St.
Paul's Episcopal Church is an historic church located directly
across the street from the Virginia State Capitol. t has long been a
popular house of worship for political figures, including General Robert E.
Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
