Intro.  Every June, I represent the US commercial explosives industry at UN sub-committee meetings that address transport and hazard communication of hazardous materials.  The meetings are held at the European headquarters of the UN in Geneva, Switzerland.

This was a very busy two weeks for me, so there wasn't a lot of time for photography; however, some opportunities presented themselves.  This photo collection includes:

  • A few photos of my hotel, favorite place to eat breakfast, and of Geneva and Lake Geneva.
  • Photos from a Sunday afternoon spent with a friend in Ferney-Voltaire, a part of the metropolitan area of Geneva located across the border in France.
  • Photos of some birds around Geneva and Ferney-Voltaire.  Among these are the common buzzard and the red kite, both new species for me.

Some of the photos (like the one above) are my experimentation with Photoshop.  They are versions of the photos that have had the "Orton Effect" applied to them.  This is a technique which blends two completely different photos of the same scene, resulting in a distinctive mix of high and low detail areas within the same photo.  After applying this effect, the two photos were differentially blended creating a surrealistic, abstract effect.  Whatever ... it was interesting and fun for me.

Photo info.  All of the photos were shot with a Canon EOS 7D MK II DSLR and an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens or a Sony DSC-WX50 camera.  All images were shot Raw (Canon) or JPG (Sony) and processed in Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® CC
