Intro.  In September, 2014, I traveled to Wyoming for a photo shoot in the Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.  This was a Joseph Van Os photo tour led by Len Rue, Jr.   The trip was a little different than others because:

  • Patty went with me.  She wasn't a participant in the photo tour, so she spent her days relaxing and sightseeing on her own.  Then, a couple of evenings, she met up with our photo group for dinner and enjoyed the day's wrap up.  It was so great having her with me and letting her get to know my new friends on this tour.

  • The tour had some international flavor with Jane from the UK (Plymouth), Gary from Canada (Toronto), and two guys (coincidentally) from Australia:  Bill (Queensland) and Rod (Victoria).  From the USA, there were Frantz (NY), John (NJ), and Ray (IL).

  • We drove instead of flying.  How nice to have everything handy and to not have to worry about liquids and pocket knives in your carry on.  The drive from Texas to Wyoming was a nice, but long, two day drive with lots of pretty scenery between here and there.  Overall, we added another 3000 miles to the Durango, which, aside from one minor incident on the way home, performed admirably.  I'll keep it at least another year.

Grand Teton National Park is beautiful and has special appeal to me because of my mother's love for the park and the mountains.  And, Yellowstone National Park, with all its diversity (hot stuff, cold stuff, waterfalls, rivers and streams, mountains, prairies, and wildlife) is my favorite place to visit.  We spent 2 days in Grand Teton and 4 days in Yellowstone:

  • Photographing sunrises and sunsets.
  • Looking for elk.  They are usually quite visible, especially in the Madison Valley, this time of year; however, this time, they were almost non-existent.   We saw an occasional one or two, but that was it except for the herd hanging out in Mammoth Village (they're pretty much always there).  Perhaps its the influence of wolves in the area (we heard them howling one morning in the Madison Valley).  We did see and photograph trumpeter swans, a cormorant, ravens, bison, and pronghorn.
  • Photographing the Chapel of the Transfiguration and other historic buildings in the Menors Ferry Historic District of Grand Teton National Park.
  • Photographing historical barns and homes in Mormon Row Historic District of Grand Teton National Park.
  • Photographing the thermal features, waterfalls, and canyons of Yellowstone.
  • Had wonderful dinners at the lodges at Jackson Lake in Grand Teton and Canyon, Mammoth, and Old Faithful in Yellowstone.

Photo info.  Most of the photos in the slideshow are mine; however, there are a few by Patty and Len, also.  Except for the intro photos (#1 - #9), most of the photos in the slideshow are presented in the order in which they were taken.  Click the slideshow icon at left to see the photos from the trip.  The following equipment was used:

All images were shot Raw (5DMKII & 7D) or JPG (Patty's camera) and processed in Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 5.6
