After attending my usual UN meetings in late June and early July, I was in transit from Geneva to home on July 4 and missed the Independence Day holiday. Patty and I compensated for that missed holiday by traveling to Austin to spend an extended weekend with friends. The weekend was a nice relaxed time spent visiting, swimming, playing Scattergories, eating, watching TV, and recovering from jet lag (me). On Saturday, we all loaded up and headed southeast to the area around Schulenburg, TX to visit the Painted Churches of Schulenburg (also known as the Painted Churches of Fayette County). These are four small churches located in the communities of Ammannsville, Dubina, High Hill, and Praha. The term "Painted" comes from the elaborate faux-finished interiors - painted by itinerant artists. We spent the day exploring these four churches and the surrounding countryside. On the way down to Schulenburg, we stopped at a Buc-ee's travel stop in Bastrop, TX. For those of you unfamiliar with Buc-ee's, they are huge and known for their very large, very clean restrooms. We did a lot of looking around and a little shopping and then headed out to find the Painted Churches. For more on the Painted Churches, click here, click here, and click here. Photo info.
