Patty and I recently traveled to Lake Tahoe, NV where I attended the annual meeting of the Institute of Makers of Explosives.  This was the first time for both of us to visit the area.  There wasn't a lot of photography as I was in meetings all day; however we did take a side trip to Virginia City one afternoon and did a little photography of Lake Tahoe before we depart for an overnight in Reno before our flight home.

St. Mary's

OK, I love photographing beautiful churches and St. Mary's in the Mountains Catholic Church, in Virgina City, was no exception.  Built in 1868 it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1875 that destroyed 90% of Virginia City.  It was completely rebuilt a year later.  The church now serves as a church, religious gift shop, and museum.  A few photos (images 1 - 6) are included in the slideshow.

Lake Tahoe

At an elevation of 6225 ft, a depth of 1654 ft, and 191 sq mi, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America and, after the Great Lakes, is largest by volume in the US.  It is also gorgeous.  Our meeting hotel was lakeside on the northeast end of the lake (well within the Cartwright's Ponderosa ranch).  As noted, I was in meetings most of the days there; however, I was seated facing a wall of windows/doors with a wonderful view of the lake's Crystal Bay.  On our last evening there, the IME hosted an awards dinner in the same meeting room, and during a break I walked down to the beach and enjoyed a beautiful post-sunset twilight.  I snapped a few photos, one of which is included in the slideshow (image 7).

The following morning, before departing for Reno, Patty and I drove along the lake.  We stopped at the Memorial Point Scenic Overlook to enjoy the views of the lake.  While there, Patty collect a couple of large pine cones.  See images 8 - 10 in the slideshow.

Sparks Marina Park Lake

Before departing Reno for home, we spent one night in Sparks, located just east of Reno. We stayed at a Hampton Inn and our room had a balcony looking out on Sparks Marina Park Lake. The park and lake are located on a naturally occurring aquifer and seemed to be very popular with all sorts of water fowl. After sunset, I did some photography from the balcony and a couple of those photos are included in the slideshow (images 11 and 12).
