Intro.  Every June, I represent the US commercial explosives industry at UN sub-committee meetings that address transport and hazard communication of hazardous materials.  The meetings are held at the European headquarters of the UN in Geneva, Switzerland.

This was a very busy week for me, so there wasn't a lot of time for photography; however, some opportunities presented themselves.  This photo collection includes:

From an excursion on the Sunday before the meetings started:

  • Photos from Northern Italy, just outside the Italian entrance to the Tunnel du Mont-Blanc.

  • Photos from a visit with my friend from the UN, Laurence, taken around her village of L'Essert.

  • Photos of Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Bellevaux (Our Lady of the Assumption Church) in Bellevaux up in the mountains of the Rhône-Alpes Region of France.

More photos!

My friend and colleague, Noel Hsu, was along for the drive to Mont-Blanc.  He's an accomplished photographer who specializes in black-and-white photography.  He has put together two PDF slideshows of photos from our Sunday outing and they're made available here for you to enjoy:

And, from the end of the week:

  • Photos of Église Catholique Romaine de la Sainte Trinité (Holy Trinity Church), a church in Geneva that is housed in a sphere.

  • A few photos from the trip home from Geneva through London Heathrow.

Also, just because I enjoyed playing with my Sony point-and-shoot camera, there are two videos available:

  • One depicting take-off at Geneva airport, some cloud scenes on the way to London, and the approach and landing at London Heathrow (click here).

  • One depicting take-off at London Heathrow as we headed home to DFW Airport (click here).

For the photographers out there, here's an interesting tidbit of information.  Of the interiors shot at the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Bellevaux, only one was on tripod (image #12).  All of the other church interiors were shot handheld at high ISOs (ISO 2000 - 3200) to compensate for the low light level in the church.  Today's DSLRs are doing a remarkable job of handling low light situations, especially when compared to the films of yesteryear.

The following equipment was used:

All images were shot Raw (Canon) or JPG (Sony) and processed in Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 5.  Additional photo data is provided below each photo in the slideshow.  Enjoy the photos!
