Intro.  Every June, I represent the US commercial explosives industry at UN sub-committee meetings that address transport and hazard communication of hazardous materials.  The meetings are held at the European headquarters of the UN in Geneva, Switzerland. This year, I had the opportunity to have a Sunday brunch in the home of a good friend from the UN.  Laurence lives in Bellevaux, up in the mountains of the Rhône-Alpes Region of France.  Also, I had the opportunity to get out of Geneva for a weekend and spend it in Blumenstein with friends from my Denali 2011 trip, Christian and Fabienne.

On Saturday of that visit, we drove to a river gorge known as the Aareschlucht, or the Aar River Gorge.  The Aar River is a tributary of the High Rhine and is the longest river that both rises and ends entirely within Switzerland.  The gorge is very deep with steep walls (some rising as high as 165 feet) on either side of the river flowing through it.  There is a walkway along the entire length of the gorge that provides easy walking access to the gorge.  It was a drizzly day with heavy overcast; however, Christian, Fabienne, and I had our cameras out capturing views of the gorge.  Although it cut the light level some, the overcast provided beautiful, diffuse lighting that made photographing the gorge challenging and rewarding.  You can view my photos in this gallery and, if Christian and Fabienne post a gallery of their photos, I'll add a link to it on this page later.
